When Marilyn first meets William at the train station on a cold December day, she thinks he’s crazy. Soon she realizes that he’s not crazy—just quirky—and she is stunned that he recognizes her as the wife of Bobby Overmire, a Marine who was killed in the Beirut bombings in 1983. As time passes, Marilyn becomes much more interested in William than in the husband she lost over two decades ago. But William is harboring a secret—a secret that could destroy Marilyn’s world all over again.

Life was hard after Bobby died at war, but Marilyn made the best of it. She raised their three kids, and continued living the normal life she knew though her heart ached with the thought she’d never see her husband again. Sitting on a bench at the local train station, she meets a man named William, who announces to her that she’s a gift. She’s convinced the man is loony but soon finds out William knew her Bobby and more importantly knew what happened in the final hours of his life.
In After All These Years, Ms. Masters weaves intricate plot aspects of both the past and present masterfully. I felt as if I were in the story with the characters, seeing their life as they did. I sympathize for Marilyn and the pain she obviously went through and enjoyed the ending, where Ms. Masters pulls at your heartstrings with one final plot twist that makes you smile and cry at the same time. Ms. Masters tells a lot of story in only a few pages making this one of the best novellas I've read in a long time. A highly enjoyable story, After All These Years, is a definite keeper.
